| More about: | Who We Are A community of faith based on the Lordship of Jesus Christ
Our Congregation is a growing and diverse group of energetic and committed believers. Members come from all ages and professions, and also from all over the world (Korea, Guyana, Nigeria, Cuba, India, Philippines, Canada, Brazil, and yes, the United States). We are a "salad bowl" of peoples who respect and learn from each other; explore and build relationships that reach across ethnic, age and educational barriers; and who fully believe that our diversity is a strength and a reflection of what God wants in our world. Our Ongoing Life shows recent events: All Saints Day - Sunday November 4, 2007, Father's Day, Mother's Day, Amita & family after her baptism,Sanjay's and Asha's Baptism October 7, 2007, A guest pastor and church members recognized for their service to the congregation. Our history
reflects the history of Astoria community. Founded in 1846, the
church was originally located on Franklin Street in Astoria. The congregation
moved to its present location in 1922, and expanded its facilities in
1930. Over the years the congregation has reached out to the people in
the community, and especially to new immigrant groups. Early members were
from Scotland, Ireland, and Germany, and included many of the leading
families in the area. The church reached its largest membership in the
1950s when it had over 1200 members on roll, and reported the largest
Sunday School program in New York. The Presbyterian Church of Astoria
sponsored a basketball league, Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs; community
musicals and dinners; and very active mens and womens organizations. However,
other than differences in language or accents, the members were largely
Anglo-European in origins.
Our Pastor In 1994 Dr. Olinger was called to serve as pastor, and the congregation continued its commitment to serve this community. Repairs were made to the facilities; new approaches to worship were explored; the women’s organization was re-instituted; the partnership with the Thai congregation began; and the vision that "We are a Pentecost people" was adopted, reflecting the strong belief that The Astoria Presbyterian Church is called to minister to and with all peoples in ways that allow them to share the mighty deeds God has worked in their lives. The history of The Astoria Presbyterian Church is one that is rich and powerful, but the future is one that is exciting and alive in its commitment to build community and relationships with all the members of the Astoria community.
