OUR MINISTRIES
Located in the midst of one of the most exciting and diverse neighborhoods in New York City, the ministry of the Astoria Presbyterian Church is one of supporting and building community and relationships. The church facilities include a large sanctuary with a pipe organ; a gymnasium that is set up for volleyball, half-court basketball, and badminton, and that also has a full stage; and various small classrooms and meeting areas that are regularly used in our outreach and ministry. It is our belief that as a "house of God" we should provide safe space for worship, learning, growing, support, and recreation. To this end we offer the following programs:
WORSHIP

Special services are held on various holidays, such as Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Easter) and Christmas Eve. These evening services provide a chance for those who work to celebrate the holidays, but are early enough for those with children to attend as well.
All worship services are open to all people, and the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is celebrated the first Sunday of each month and is open for all attending worship.

In the Background in our sanctuary, the manger scene donated by past music director Bryant Keller stands prominently as present music director Dani Rhodes directs the Christmas Pagent rehersal.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Our commitment is to support and assist those living in the Astoria community. Recognizing the diversity and ever changing nature of this community, The Presbyterian Church of Astoria is constantly seeking to find new ways to serve in our community - through partnerships with others; by providing space for community groups; and by establishing programs to meet specific needs. To this end we offer:
Space for 12 Step Groups (AA, NA, Al-Anon, Al-ATeen, etc.) five nights a week;
OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING AND GROWTH
The quest to grow and learn more about who we are and what we believe is a quest that haunts most of us. Not only questions of "Who is God?" or "What does the Bible say?" fight for our attention as spiritual seekers, but also questions like: "How do I live my faith in my life?" "What does God want me to do with my life?", and "How do I pray?" also arise for many people. We provide opportunities to explore and study the areas that are of interest to you in your life. Young adults meet the first and third Sundays of each month to explore issues important to them (currently relationships); a "Book of the Month Club" meets the last Wednesday of each month to explore and talk about books of interest (i.e. "Tuesdays with Morrie" the best seller about death and dying, and celebrating life; the Harry Potter books - what’s the controversy about?’ "Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time" - the new quest for the historical Jesus; and others). In the past short term studies have included: basic Bible studies; The Book of Revelation: What does it really say about the millennium?; prayer; finding your spiritual gifts; Handel’s Messiah; and other topics suggested by members and visitors.
Having a Piano Lab for the congregation's children (and those intrested in learning piano) is a dream coming true with funds being raised by the children and in yard sales. (pictures to arrive soon)
Likewise, Operation Smile promoted by FPCA children's effort and supported by the congregation at large has provided surgery for 6 children suffering with cleft palates! (pictures to arrive soon)
The Computer Lab again for FPCA children (and those interested in developing computer skills) is being initiated with the "get one / give one" approach. For reduced cost, buying one and giving one computer to a "third world" child is an approach expedted to be initiated soon yet this year in 2007. (more information & pictures to come soon)
