Our Future Project

The Presbyterian Church of Astoria is a church in transition; a church focused on serving the community; and church seeking to build an exciting and hopeful future.
In April 2006 the congregation voted to become partners with HANAC (www.HANAC.org) and The Enterprise Foundation (www.Enterprise.org ) and develop ninety plus units of affordable senior housing on our current site. While this meant the loss of existing facilities, the congregation recognized that we could no longer effectively serve the community unless we made this change (the existing facilities needed $1.6 million in “life and safety” repairs, and another $1.6 million in upgrades to become viable). During this time of change the congregation came to understand that serving God and our neighbors took priority over maintaining bricks and mortar, and so this difficult decision was made (Pictures of our current church condition can be seen ibelow).

But as difficult as it was, it was also a time of building hope and a vision of a “church without walls” where loving God and loving neighbor were the focus and priority of our ministry. Through this project we can meet the most critical need of our community – affordable housing for seniors – and continue to serve the neighborhood with new energy and the funds needed to reach even more people with new and exciting programs.
We are a church that believes in serving our community in word and in deed; a church where all are welcome and valued; and a place where God is doing new things as God leads us into the future.
