“You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you
who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves
with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free,
male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Galatians 3:26
“Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has welcomed you,
for the glory of God.”
Romans 15:7
At the Presbyterian Church of Astoria we believe that we all are children of God, and therefore we each have value in the sight of God. We model this by working to be “open and affirming”, meaning we are open to all God’s children, and affirming of all life situations.” For us, a child is as important as our oldest member; a woman has the same rights as any man; those who are part of the GLBTQ community can lead and have full standing in the body of Christ; and ministry is shared by all people, and not just the work of a few. In short, we take John 3:16 to heart: “For God so loved the world that God Gave God’s own son, that whoever believed in him might have eternal life…”
To this end we offer children’s ministries (Sunday school and children’s choir); adult ministries (Sunday Bible study); a homeless ministry in conjunction with a congregation in Manhattan; and we are always open to trying new ministries and small groups such as a Taize Sunday evening service and a confirmation class culminating with church membership in December 2007. Because we are multi-ethnic, with members from all corners of the world (Korean, Nigerian, Italian, Philippine, Indian, Guyanese, Portuguese, Trinidadian and Japanese along with folks from Louisiana, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Texas and other states), we celebrate our diversity and work to build community and understanding through fellowship meals, music from other traditions, and ministries to help new immigrants get settled in our neighborhood.
In short we are a place for you. You will find acceptance rather than judgment; hope rather than fear; and community in the midst of diversity… a place where God is worshipped in word and deed, and where all God’s children are welcomed and loved.
